COA has developed a plan to help our students improve their ability to solve problems. This plan has been developed with the help of faculty, staff, Board of Trustee members, community members, and students. Information from a variety of sources confirms that problem solving skills is an important skill that needs a higher degree of emphasis.

Faculty and staff will receive professional development on the best methods to promote problem solving. Students will be introduced to problem solving during their orientation and advising sessions. COA’s introduction to college (ACA) classes will serve as the first point in curriculum where students will encounter problem solving. Many other courses throughout the curriculum will focus on promoting and assessing problem solving in order to determine the best way to include problem solving as one of COA’s General Education Core Competencies.

Students’ problem solving skills will be assessed throughout the five year plan to determine the effectiveness of the plan. Baseline data will be collected during the fall 2013 and spring 2014 semesters. Data collected in subsequent semesters can then be compared to this baseline as a comparison for improvement. Also, because problem solving skill will be widely assessed in many different courses, comparisons can be made between first year and second year students.

This plan has enough plasticity to evolve throughout its duration. Data and feedback will constantly be monitored in order to improve our processes and provide students with opportunities to develop essential problem solving skills.
